The Panthers bounced back from a tough loss to Pottsboro on Oct. 4 to record their first shutout of the season.

In Lone Oak, Jake Carroll ran nine times for 165 yards and three touchdowns and also returned an interception for a score as Van Alstyne defeated Lone Oak 36-0 in District 5-3A (I) action.

Tymothe Rosenthal threw for 89 yards and a touchdown while Cam Montgomery finished with three catches for 81 yards and a score for Van Alstyne.

After the Pottsboro loss, Panthers head coach Mikeal Miller said that was a “huge district game” but he was “very proud of the way” his team went out and “battled for four quarters.” That mentality clearly continued into Friday’s game, as the Panther defense held Lone Oak scoreless.

Lone Oak (1-5, 0-2) finished with just 87 yards, all of which came on the ground.

The win improves the Panthers’ district record to 2-1, following the loss to Pottsboro and a 29-21 win over Rains on Sept. 27. Van Alstyne’s season record sits at 3-4, as the team opened the season with a 34-24 win over Aubrey before dropping the next three games to Sunnyvale, Anna and Gainesville. This Friday will see the Panthers back at home to host Commerce in another District 5-3A (I) contest.

While Van Alstyne sits right behind Pottsboro near the top of the district standings, the Tigers are right in the middle with a 1-1 record after a bye week on Oct. 11. Commerce’s last game was a 40-12 win at home against Lone Oak. The Tigers’ district loss came Sept. 27 when the Cardinals defeated them 63-14 in Pottsboro.

Van Alstyne will be looking for its first home victory of the season in its second-to-last regular season home game. The Panthers have a bye next week and will then travel to Howe on Nov. 1 before hosting Bonham in the last game of the regular season on Nov. 8.
