BELLS — The Van Alstyne cross country team ran a tough muddy race in their district meet in Bells on Oct. 13.


The mud was a real obstacle for the Van Alstyne runners, stealing shoes, causing slips, and making the final 800 meters uphill a daunting challenge. Despite it all the potential setbacks, the Panthers varsity boys, girls, and junior varsity boys runners put on a fantastic performance that won all three a district champions title. The wins moved them onto a regionals appearance on Oct. 12.


“All teams worked really hard and are ambitious to move onto state,” cross country coach Rachel Severino said of her Panther runners, “They work hard as a team and keep each other accountable. I’m really proud of them.”


The varsity girls won their spot as district champions with some impressive runs — G’daya Hall finished third overall with a 15:13 time, Kate Carson finished eighth with a 15:44 time, Jenna Leinart finished ninth with a 15:45 time, Sara Fernandez finished 10th with a 15:51 time, Margie Carson finished 14th with a 16:22 time, Olivia Edwards finished 19th with a 16:34 time, and Morgan Bruton who finished 28th with a 17:34 time.


The boys varsity finished with four top-10 finishes to give them a district win — Bryce Sevarino led the Panthers with a second-place finish and an 18:09 finishing time, Ashton Dennis finished close behind at third place with an 18:30 time, Marcus Cooper finished fifth with a 19:01 time, Blake Hyatt finished seventh with a 19:20 time, Jordan Caldwell finished 11th with a 20:04 time, Sergio Castillo finished 12th with a 20:11 time and Cade Milroy finished 13th with a 20:19 time.


The Panthers also saw some great runs by Lady Panthers Alysa Crow, who was an individual district champion with a first-place finish with a 17:36 time, and Abbi Boyd with a second-place finish and a 17:45 time. For the boys, Andrew Tarlton led the pack with a first-place finish and a 21:06 time.
