Well, everyone’s invited to a scoreboard watching party on Nov. 4 as four District 5-3A (I) teams battle for three playoff spots.
Van Alstyne, Howe, Pilot Point and Whitesboro go into the league’s final week of action all knotted at 2-2, and Pottsboro has locked up its sixth consecutive district championship.
Van Alstyne will travel to Pilot Point. Howe is also on the road with a game in Callisburg. Whitesboro closes out the regular season with a trip to Pottsboro.
Van Alstyne and Howe would obviously lock up playoff spots with wins and that, coupled — or is it tripled? — with a Whitesboro loss, would put the Bulldogs in a tie with VA for second place.
By virtue of its 39-36 win, Van Alstyne would land the second seed from the district for playoff purposes.
A Howe win and a VA loss would put the Bulldogs in second, and everyone is assuming that Whitesboro loses to Pottsboro in that final game.
It’s an astute position that second or third in the district won’t mean that much come playoff time,
The second place team will most likely meet Grandview from District 6-3A (I) while the third place team will play Dallas Madison, and both will be stern tests for our district representative.
Sunnyvale is unbeaten in six games in that eight-team district and faces Kemp on Friday to wrap its regular season schedule.
However, they don’t play the games in the newspapers, and it will all be settled on Nov. 4.
