It won't win any awards for artistic merit, but hey, a win is a win baby and that's just what the Howe Bulldogs needed following the loss in the season opener.

Howe (1-1) pounded out a workman-like 38-13 victory over the Bowie Jackrabbits on Sept. 2 at Bulldog Stadium.

Jaden Matthews scored three touchdowns, none more spectacular that his 85-yard return of the second-half kickoff. The senior tailback rushed for 136 yards on 25 carries with a pair of one-yard scoring runs to go along with his special teams masterpiece.

Brent Masters, who ran for 95 yards in the Gunter contest, got the scoring started with a 30-yard run midway through the first quarter. He finished with 106 yards on 14 totes. Dylan Moreau had a key 14-yard run in the opening drive.

Brice Honaker kicked the first of his five extra points following the run. He also added a 22-yard field goal in the third period.

An interception by Cooper Akins early gave the Bulldogs a short field to work with, taking over at the Jackrabbit 30 yard line. It took several plays before Tyler Grisham punched it in to give Howe a 14-0 lead.

The Bowie defense kept the Bulldogs contained early in the second quarter before a 67-yard drive bumped the score to 21-7 at the half.

Matthews scored on a one-yard blast and he had a 20-yard run in the drive.

Things really got chippy in the second half as the officiating crew got in some exercise with the yellow flags.

After Matthews kickoff return opened the half, Honaker's 22-yard boot made it a 31-7 game at the end of three.

Penalties made the work hard, but the Bulldogs added a late score on another Matthews run of one yard and they came away with the 25-point win.

On the injury front, safety Winston Mosse is doubtful for this game due to a knee injury, while Seth Seibold is listed as questionable.

Things get tougher in week three as the Bulldogs host Muenster. The Hornets are coming off of a 35-12 win over Pilot Point.

The night will also serve as Homecoming at Bulldog Stadium.
