We have obviously slept through some new national holiday with all the fireworks emanating from Panther Stadium on Aug. 26.
Actually, it seems that it was just another Van Alstyne comeback as the Panthers spotted the visiting Wilmer Hutchins Eagles a 16-0 advantage, then rallied for a 20-16 win.
The season opener was played with a threat of rain to the east, but no precipitation to dampen the spirits of the home crowd on this night.
Senior Levi Jones carried the ball 32 times, racking up 150 yards, two touchdowns and a crucial two-point conversion run to seal the win.
Sophomore Gage Proctor scored the winning touchdown with less than a minute left in the game, and the Panther defense stepped up big with interceptions by Rhett Gallagher and Grayson Leinart and a fumble recovery by Michael Paredes.
Proctor was 10-of-21 passing in his varsity debut at quarterback, and he added 41 yards of offense on six carries. Michael Hensley Jr. caught three balls for 39 yards.
Van Alstyne will host Bonham on Sept. 2.
