Van Alstyne junior Sydney Simmons, a Duke University soccer commit, has had an eventful summer as she continues to elevate her soccer career.
Simmons, who plays locally for Solar Chelsea ECNL, was invited to attend the Nike-ECNL/id2 National Training camp in Portland, Ore. There were 85 top players from around the country chosen to attend the camp and compete against each other. At the end of the camp a dinner was held at Nike World Headquarters and the top 11 girls were picked for a “Winners Trip” to New York City.
Simmons was one of the 11 girls chosen to extend their experience and she, along with three of her future Duke teammates, had several sightseeing adventures.
The highlight of the trip, however, was the chance to meet and participate in training sessions with both the Bayern Munich and Real Madrid soccer teams. The girls also attended an International Champions Cup soccer match between the two teams, complete with field-side seats and passes. They were introduced to the more than 82,000 fans in attendance at Met Life Stadium, with their names and photographs displayed on the Jumbotron.
Simmons was also selected for the Generation Adidas International FFC Frankfurt select training program. On Aug. 13 she departed for Germany for nine days of training with FFC Frankfurt Select coaches, some sightseeing and participation in several competitive soccer matches while in Germany.
It was quite a summer and quite a series of accomplishments for this young soccer standout.
