Rita G. Kinney

Van Alstyne - Rita G. Kinney of Van Alstyne, Texas, passed away at Wilson N. Jones Regional Medical Center in Sherman, Texas, on November 22, 2021.

Rita was born in Constantia, New York, on March 14, 1941. She graduated from Central Square Central High School in upstate New York in 1959.

Rita married her high school sweetheart Ronald M. Kinney on November 18, 1961. They had two daughters, Kelliann and Kathleen, and remained in upstate New York until 1973 when they moved to McKinney, Texas.

Rita was preceded in death by Ron, her husband of 53 years; parents Ivues and Mary Cottet; sister Ruth Warren; brothers Ray Cottet, Royce Cottet, and Rich Cottet.

Rita is survived by her daughter Kelli and husband Rusty Locke, daughter Kathy; grandchildren Kevin Simms, Jordan Locke, Brisco Schaefer and wife Erin, Benjamin Schaefer, and Isabelle Schaefer; great grandchildren Natalie Simms and Leo Simms; sisters Roberta Laws and Rosalyn House; brother Ron Cottet; a plethora of nieces and nephews; and many loving friends.

Rita collected turtles and Moss Rose china. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Van Alstyne, a member of United Methodist Women, president of the Foster Grandparent Program, active in Texoma Council of Governments, and cofounder of the Anna Service League. She and her husband were longtime patrons of the Sherman Community Players. They were also avid travelers, visiting all 50 states and 9 countries.

Rita was the feisty matriarch of the family and the boss of us all.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:00AM Saturday, November 27, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church of Van Alstyne, 301 S Preston St. Van Alstyne, TX 75495. The family will receive friends from 5:00PM to 7:00PM Friday, November 26, 2021 at Scoggins Funeral Home & Crematory. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to First United Methodist Church in Van Alstyne Texas, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
