On Saturday morning, following the Van Alstyne Friends of the Library breakfast, the last in the recent Senior Information Series will take place at the Senior Center, which is located at 148 S. Main.
Gwen Griffin, who specializes in the reverse mortgage world, will be discussing financing options for seniors. More specifically, she will discuss the advisability and procedure for obtaining reverse mortgages. American Advisors Group defines a reverse mortgage as a “financial agreement in which a homeowner relinquishes equity in his home in exchange for regular payments, typically to supplement retirement income.”
Griffin said she was in the mortgage industry for 18 years, and got very frustrated with it. When the Texas legislature passed the law allowing reverse mortgages in 2013, Griffin said she took a sideways step and made this her priority. She makes presentations at least four times each month for financial planners, she said, and has been in this segment of the business since then. After her presentation, she will open the floor up for questions.
For those who want to participate in both the Friends of the Library fundraising breakfast and this senior information seminar, the breakfast runs from 7-10 a.m. at the Van Alstyne Community Center and features a breakfast made that morning by volunteers. Then, the Senior Center’s doors will be open at 10 a.m. and the information seminar begins at 10:30 a.m. It will run until about noon, although Griffin said if people are still asking questions, she’ll stay until the very last one is answered.
This series is not only for seniors, but anyone interested in the subjects discussed, including family members and those not yet at senior citizen age. There is no charge to attend, or for the coffee and refreshments available to all there.
Senior Center board member Linda McConnell said they will pick this senior information series up again with new subjects and presenters in early spring.
