VAN ALSTYNE — The Panthers varsity baseball squad took on and blew-out the Farmersville Farmers, 8-2, in their home appearance on Monday, Feb. 25.

The first two and a half innings were quite as stringing together consecutive hits appeared to allude both teams until the bottom of the third, where Van Alstyne exploded for 4 runs with 2 outs in the inning.

It started with an error by the Farmersville shortstop which allowed Nathan Cuthbertson to reach first, followed by a walk and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases for the Panthers. A deep flyable by Cade Morgan was misplayed by the Farmers outfield, allowing Rhett Gallagher, Samuel Tormos, and Cuthbertson to score the first 3 runs of the ballgame for Van Alstyne. David Terrill wrapped things up with a smack into right field for an RBI single that brought Morgan home and giving the Panthers a 4-0 lead.

The Panthers picked up another run off a Zach Smith single in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 5-0 Van Alstyne lead as the ballgame was coming to its final innings.

Farmersville managed to get a couple runs across in the top of the sixth after 2 walks, a single, a costly error by the Van Alstyne pitcher that allowed 1 run to come across. The Farmers managed to get another run out of a double play ball making it a 5-2 game, unfortunately for Farmersville their next batter rolled over a weak groundball to Tormos at third base that ended any chance at a Farmersville comeback.

The Panthers scored 3 more runs in the bottom of the sixth off of a deep 2 RBI double by Tormos and another Farmersville error, giving Van Alstyne their final score of the ballgame.

Tormos went 1-2 with 2 RBIs, 2 walks and 2 runs, Gallagher went 2-2 with 2 walks and 2 runs, Terrill went 1-2 with an RBI and a walk, Smith went 1-3 with an RBI, and Tyler Wilson went 1-3 with 1 run and 1 walk.

Chandler David started for the Panthers on the mound, going 2 innings only giving up 1 walk and picking up 5 of the 9 total strikeouts for Van Alstyne.

The Panthers will square off against Howe in their first conference game of the season on Monday, March. 4.
