Elected by his peers, Van Alstyne Police Officer Azhar Ulhaq is 2019’s Officer of the Year.

Police Chief Tim Barnes presented Officer Ulhaq with a plaque in his honor at the Van Alstyne City Council meeting Tuesday night. Ulhaq is a veteran police officer, who was selected from several applicants once the city and the district agreed on all the details involved in hiring a School Resource Officer.

Barnes said that Ulhaq is assigned to the Van Alstyne ISD school district as its SRO, where he’s worked for more than a year. In the summers, when school is not in session, Ulhaq works as a patrol officer. Barnes said, too, that the agreement with the ISD is that when the PD has a serious incident that requires more manpower, Ulhaq can assist with those as well.

Ulhaq is a well-known presence not only at the schools, where he teaches his own programs and seems to be making a difference in students’ lives, but at all school events including the sports home football, basketball, and baseball games.

“He’s a very dependable officer,” Barnes said. “He handles that task at the district with a positive attitude. We are very fortunate to have him.”
