It is homecoming week at Van Alstyne High School. Students have been participating in homecoming related activities and themed days to help get in the panther spirit.
Monday kicked off with an “Athlete versus Mathlete” theme; Tuesday was College Day; Wednesday was “Way out Wednesday”; Thursday was “Tacky Tourist Day”; and Friday is “Claws Out Friday, Spirit Day.” The homecoming masquerade dance is being held on Saturday at the high school. Students voted on their homecoming court last week during lunches, and finalists for homecoming king include Mason Adams, DeAngelo Alexander, Koi Beck, Michael Hensley, and Levi Jones. Homecoming queen finalists are Chloe Houston, Sadie Ingram, Shelby Litzkow, Alex Roddy, and Peyton Welch.
The homecoming king and queen will be crowned at Friday night’s game.
College Day was also recently held at Van Alstyne High School. The event featured nearly 60 colleges and universities from both in-state and out-of-state and served as a good time for students to learn more about different universities and to gather information about schools of interest. Students were able to register for the college fair and create a personalized barcode that colleges could scan. This technology allows the students to easily get more information from the schools they are potentially interested in. Juniors and Seniors are allowed two college days to visit schools and Seniors are encouraged to apply early to meet priority admissions and scholarship deadlines.
It isn’t just the older students who stay busy. On Friday, fourth graders at Van Alstyne Elementary School hosted their grandparents at their annual Grandparents Day. Grandparents were encouraged to attend the program and walk through their student’s classroom, meet their teacher, and see more about life at VAES.
