LONE OAK — Late inning action and timely hitting gave the Van Alstyne Panthers a 5-1 victory over Lone Oak in District 10-3A action on Tuesday, April 3.
It was a quiet game through five innings of play with both pitchers combining for 15 strikeouts, and limiting the lineups to only one hit.
In the top of the fifth the Panthers broke the ice — a leadoff double by Hunter Hutchison started things in the right direction for Van Alstyne (9-6, 5-2), which gained sole possession of second place and is a half-game behind district-leading Leonard. Tyler Wilson followed with an RBI single up the middle and the Panthers took the 1-0 lead.
They went done there however — a wild pitch brought Tyler Wilson around to score and a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Chase Wilson brought the final run of the inning across as the Panthers carried a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning.
Van Alstyne threw on a couple insurance runs in the top of the sixth — a Jordan Velekei double started the offense, Hutchinson picked up another hit with a single and two fielder’s choices from Tyler Wilson and Cam Montgomery brought them around to score.
Lone Oak managed some offense in the bottom of the sixth after a double and a Van Alstyne error helped it avoid the shutout.
Hutchinson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Wilson went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Velekei went 2-for-4.
Rhett Gallagher racked up 16 strikeouts and only giving up three hits and 1 earned run. He did not walk a batter.
The Panthers will hope to keep the momentum going against Whitewright on Friday, April 6.
