WHITEWRIGHT — The Panthers were in the driver’s seat in their 7-1 victory over the Whitewright Tigers in District 10-3A action on Tuesday, March 13.


The Tigers drew first blood in the bottom of the first when back-to-back walks issued by Van Alstyne starter Samuel Tormos was followed by an error that allowed a Whitewright runner to cross home. The Tigers took the 1-0 lead but it was the only offense Whitewright would manage.


It was all Panthers (6-3, 2-0) from there, scoring big in the third inning — Tormos helped his caused with a deep triple to center with two outs in the inning. Back-to-back Whitewright errors resulted in two runners coming across to score and the Panthers took the lead at 2-1. Van Alstyne continued to pour it on in the third, padding its lead to 4-1 going into the fourth inning.


The Panthers went on to score twice in the fourth and once in the fifth, more than they needed, as they held on to the 7-1 lead.


Tormos, Jordan Velekei and Chandler David combined on a one-hitter.


David also went 2-for-3 with a double and scored, Tormos tripled, walked twice and scored, Zane Madison drove in two runs and Chase Wilson walked twice, drove in a run and scored.
