CHICO — The Howe boys powerlifting team won the Division 3 Region 6 title and is sending a pair of athletes to the state meet, which will be March 24 in Abilene.
Howe won the team title with 20 points to better runner-up Wichita Falls City View by five points. Van Alstyne placed 24th.
Howe’s Mikey Hymel was the region champion at 165 pounds with a total of 1,375 pounds and is headed to state while teammate Joseph Brennen just missed qualifying as he placed third with a total of 1,155 pounds.
Howe’s Mason Riggs was the region runner-up at 181 pounds with a total of 1,160 pounds to also qualify for state.
At 114 pounds, Van Alstyne’s Jimmy Rollins was fifth at 605 pounds and Austin Cuthbertson was eighth at 545 pounds.
At 123 pounds, Howe’s Chase Barnett was fifth at 810 pounds and Van Alstyne’s Lance Jones was ninth at 725 pounds.
At 148 pounds, Howe’s Spencer Akins was fourth with 1,040 pounds
At 181 pounds, Van Alstyne’s Hunter Griffin was eighth at 1,065 pounds. Howe’s Andrew Griffin bombed out after squatting 540 pounds.
At 220 pounds, Howe’s Chase Harvey was fourth with 1,300 pounds. Van Alstyne’s Maxwell Nazarko was 11th with a total of 1,155 pounds.
At 242 pounds, Van Alstyne’s Gavin Ritchie was sixth with 1,215 pounds. Howe’s Nathan Duffee was 11th with 1,130.
At 275 pounds, Van Alstyne’s Sawyer Callies was ninth with 1,130 pounds.
At super heavyweight, Van Alstyne’s Jake Loganbill was fourth with 1,395 pounds.
