LEONARD — The Lady Panthers dropped a nailbiter on the road against the Leonard Lady Tigers, 54-50, on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
Van Alstyne tipped the game off with a consistent first quarter that saw them score 14 points. Six of those points came from the hot handed Torin Riddick. Leonard only scraped together 11 points, allowing the Lady Panthers to take an early lead.
The tides turned in the second quarter, which saw Leonard break out for a 17 point run, shooting crisply from the free-throw line making 6 of 9 in the quarter. Fortunately for the Lady Panthers, they remained a offensive threat in the quarter as they put up another 14 points of their own — with 5 more points coming from Riddick — and taking a 28-28 tie with them into halftime.
The second half performances proved to be the deciding factor in the contest. Leonard pulled away with a 15 point third quarter, while Van Alstyne struggled to find the basket. The Lady Panthers only netted 7 points in the quarter, allowing Leonard to put some separation between them with a 43-35 lead over the Lady Panthers.
Van Alstyne turned the heat back on with a 15 point final frame of the ball game. Leonard was muffled a bit with an 11 point quarter — but unfortunately for the Lady Panthers, the Lady Tigers’ deciding third quarter lead held up, just barley, seeing Leonard on top all the way through till the final buzzer.
Riddick ended her night with 14 points, while Avery Duncan pitched in nicely with 11 points for Van Alstyne.
The Lady Panthers will play again of the road against Commerce on Friday, Feb. 9.
