WHITEWRIGHT — The Lady Panthers took a loss, 51-31, against Whitewright in district play on Friday, Dec. 15 in an away game.

Whitewright kept control throughout the game, with crisp performances by junior Jy’Rae Johnson, who scored 16 points, and senior Kayela Willis, who scored 14 points for the Lady Tigers.

Despite strong performances by Van Alstyne’s Emma Donald, who scored 17 points — 9 of which came from the three — the Lady Panthers struggled to score. The deficit was highlighted by a challenging first half, where the Lady Panthers scored only 9 total points in the first quarter. This was followed up by Van Alstyne only adding 2 points to the board in the second quarter.

The Lady Panthers showed some fight in the third quarter, putting up 16 points — 9 of which came from 3-point shootings from Donald and Avery Duncan. However, it proved too late for Van Alstyne to catch up — by the end of the third, Whitewright was already leading, 40-25.

After a fourth quarter where the Lady Panthers were outscored, 11-6, the final buzzer rang and Van Alstyne was given their first district loss, moving them to 1-1 in district play.

The Van Alstyne girls hope to turn their fortune around in a district game against Commerce on Monday, Dec. 18 before entering into the Kaufman Classic tournament the weekend after Christmas.
