GUNTER — The Van Alstyne girls basketball team started the season under new head coach Tyler Dyer off right with a 54-48 win over Gunter Tuesday night in District 5-3A (I) play, as the season tipped off on Nov. 7.

Lead by center junior Maegan Thomas with 14 points and 5 rebounds, the Lady Panthers made 33 percent of their scoring attempts, averaging over 10 points a period.

Attacking the rim and keeping possession of the ball with 32 rebounds as a team combined with 54 points out of 59 field goal attempts was the winning recipe for the young Van Alstyne team, with a strong defensive performance keeping Gunter at 48 points, sealing the Van Alstyne victory.

The Lady Panthers hope to repeat this performance at their first home game of the season against Celeste on Saturday, Nov. 11.
