VAN ALSTYNE — The Van Alstyne Lady Panthers shook the house with an action-packed victory in all three sets at home on Friday, Sept. 29 with a 25-10, 25-13, 25-20 victory over the Lady Bulldogs from Howe High School.

Lady Panther Liz Purser walked off the court with 11 kills, putting in the work to help Van Alstyne (16-11, 3-3) continue the athletic tradition between two competitive district rivals. Micah Welch was a highlight for Van Alstyne, helping the Lady Panthers keep control of the game with 14 assists and 5 aces. Lindi Boling finished the game with 25 digs, while Janea Larriviere and Brittany O’Hanlon’s effort on the court combined for 17 digs.

The Lady Bulldogs started the match strong, but were put on the offensive once the Lady Panthers built up steam. The highlight of the competition for Howe was earning a short-lived lead in the final 25-20 match before Van Alstyne fought back with a barrage of scoring plays.

“We made very few errors and capitalized on the free balls they gave us,” Lady Panther head coach Veronica Valdez said of the three intense district matches between rival teams. “It wasn’t a close match. We beat them in three sets.”

Van Alstyne will continue the 3A Region 2, District 10 competition on the road in away games against Lone Oak on Tuesday, Oct. 3 and Commerce on Friday, Oct. 6. The Lady Bulldogs will continue taking on district rivals on Friday Oct. 6 when they travel to take on Lone Oak.
