ANNA — The Van Alstyne High School softball team won 7-4 over Whitewright on Tuesday in a summer league match up in Anna. The summer league is intended for player progress and friendly competition between all the district’s rivals.

“This is my fifth year in (Van Alstyne); before that I was at Howe,” Lady Panther head coach Jason Brogdon said.

The select summer softball league gives the players an opportunity to progress as players and a team over the summer in light-hearted competition.

“This is just summer league ball,” Brogdon said.

The Lady Panthers earned their first win of the summer for a record of 1-1. The Lady Tigers went down swinging, but Van Alstyne fought back with a focused and energetic performance in the closing innings. The teams played with the same determination to win as they would any regular or postseason game.

The Lady Panthers will be playing Tuesday evenings this summer at the softball fields next to Anna High School.
