The Van Alstyne Lady Panthers track and field team finished sixth out of 34 schools at the 2017, Region II meet at Whitehouse High School on April 28 and 29.
Two individuals, Emme Fernandez and Levi Jones won individual events, and will advance to the state meet.
The Van Alstyne boys’ 400-meter relay team will advance to the state meet in Austin on May 12 and 13 by virtue of its second place finish in the meet’s final event.
Freshman Sydney Ingram finished third in the 100-meter hurdles, but the University Interscholastic League named her as the ninth participant at Austin by virtue of her 15.32 finals time.
Fernandez, a junior, earned her first trip to state by winning the 300-meter hurdles with a blistering time of 46.29. That bettered her area round time of 48.30, and added 10 points to the team’s 30 ½ total.
In her first trip to a regional meet, Ingram finished second in the 100-meter hurdles to earn a trip to Austin.
A third place finish by sophomore Jenna Leinart in the 1600 meter run just missed automatic advancement to the state meet.
Jones, a senior finished first in his specialty, the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.61. That earned the boys’ team 10 points and his contribution on the second place relay team gave him 14 of the team’s 30 which placed them seventh in the 38 school field.
Senior Hannah Taylor and her twin brother Jake each finished fourth in the 3200-meter run, closing out their outstanding high school careers.
Van Alstyne junior Emma Morgan had a fourth place finish in the 800-meter run.
Howe freshman Ally Harvey finished fifth in the high jump, equaling her personal best jump of 5’1” which she had at the area meet in Farmersville.
Leonard, looking to duplicate its 2015 girls state title, was edged by Uplift Hampton, 105-100 for the Region II championships.
