Howe 5, S&S 2

The Howe Lady Bulldogs spent the first three innings of their April 26 bi-district clash with S&S looking at an 0-2 deficit.

Lady Ram pitcher Jada Mueller retired the first seven Howe batters she faced in the playoff game in Gunter.

A walk to junior Peyton Streetman broke the ice and Howe started its comeback.

Streetman advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by senior Madisyn Hargrove, cutting that lead in half.

The Lady Bulldogs scored two runs in the fifth to take a lead they never relinquished, capturing the one-game series, 5-2.

Junior pitcher Torrey Stubblefield gave up just three hits and struck out nine in the contest.

Junior Payton Griffin opened the Howe fifth with a walk, followed by a single off the bat of senior Dani Ross.

Senior Kamryn Fulenchek reached on a fielder’s choice, loading the bases with none out.

Senior Emily Sanders hit a sacrifice fly to left field, driving in Griffin with the tying run.

Junior Erin Blackburn, who finished the game with two hits in four trips to the plate, drove in Ross with the go-ahead run.

After a leadoff walk in the S&S fourth inning, Stubblefield retired the next eight Lady Rams, and the Lady Bulldogs kept on swinging.

Blackburn beat out an infield hit to open the seventh and then stole second base. She might have done that a few times this season.

Streetman put done a sacrifice bunt, moving Blackburn to third and Hargrove plated Blackburn with another sacrifice bunt.

Hargrove drove in a pair of runs and was 1-for-3 at the plate.

Stubblefield reached on a Lady Ram error, then scored on a double to center field by senior Kayla Anderson to make it a 5-2 game. Anderson had two hits in four at-bats.

S&S got a runner to third in its final trip to the plate, but a ground out to first and Stubblefield’s ninth strikeout wiped out that threat.

Bi-district wins are nice trophies to add to the school case, but this team, after regional losses the past two season’s, is looking for more.

Howe will play the winner of the Sunnyvale-Edgewood bi-district series in the area round.
