The Howe Athletic Booster Club held its 2017 banquet at the high school on April 23, recognizing student-athletes in all sports.
The booster club raised more than $20,000 in the current school year, helping support athletic teams with equipment purchases, as well as lending support in all areas of athletic competitions.
After a meal catered by Bucksnort Barbecue of Van Alstyne, the awards were announced.
With the exception of girls’ golf, softball and baseball, each sport recognized most valuable players from the past season.
Golf, softball and baseball teams are still in involved in the 2017 season and those awards will be announced at the end of their competitions.
In addition to MVP honors, the winners of the Norman Dickey award, the Dickey Thornhill Memorial Scholarship winners, and the booster club scholarship winners were announced.
Coach Norman Dickey was a long-time Bulldog football coach and he still substitutes at the school when needed. This year the Howe coaching staff recognized three students for the Norman Dickey award.
Senior Brandon Wall has participated in five sports at Howe every year since his freshman season, and he was a starter on two of those team sports.
Tanner Hartsfield was recognized for his 100 percent effort in football, baseball and powerlifting.
Madisyn Hargrove also exemplified that Bulldog spirit as she competed in basketball and softball for four years.
In 2000 Dickey Thornhill, a Bulldog football player, passed away and his family created the Dickey Thornhill Memorial Scholarship.
This award honors their son’s determination to excel in sports with limited athletic ability.
“He wasn’t the biggest or fastest, but he had a big heart and that’s what these kids bring to the sport as Bulldogs,” Leon Thornhill said.
Emily Sanders and Tyler Grisham were the 2017 Thornhill Scholarship winners.
The Howe Booster club presented four $500 awards at the banquet and those went to Dreanna McAdams, Emily Sanders, Matt Griffin and Mati Abner.
The Bulldog Fan of the Year award was shared by two ladies who worked tirelessly all year to support Howe athletics: Carrie Hudson, wife of athletic director and head football coach Zack, and Kristi Rhoten, wife of coach Wes Rhoten will share the 2017 award.
