Van Alstyne 7, Commerce 0
Sophomore pitcher Rhett Gallagher threw his second no-hitter of the season as the Van Alstyne Panthers beat Commerce 7-0 at Forrest Moore Park on Tuesday night.
Gallagher had no-hit Lone Oak earlier in the year, and he came back with another sterling pitching performance in the senior-night win.
Seniors Luke Hundt, Jimmy Head, Ryan Cole and manager Savannah Chandler were honored before the game.
The Panthers, even with the 7-0 win, had troubles hitting the Commerce starter, collecting just seven hits, all singles, in the contest.
With Gallagher throwing bullets, the Panthers’ 3-run rally in the first inning was enough offense for this night.
Gallagher lead off the inning with a walk, moved to third on a single by Hundt, and scored on a wild pitch.
Sophomore Tyler Wilson, who had two hits in the game, singled to drive in Hundt.
Wilson eventually scored on a Commerce error, getting the Panthers off to a 3-0 start.
Gallagher struck out 10 and walked just two for the win.
The Panthers finish the district season tied with Howe for second place, both with 8-4 league records.
A tie-breaker game for seeding is tentatively set for Monday at a neutral sight.
