Howe 13, Leonard 9

The Howe Bulldogs honored six graduating seniors on Tuesday night, then proceeded to hold onto a tie for second in the district with Van Alstyne, beating Leonard 13-9

It got a little touchy at the end as the Tigers got the bases loaded and the tieing run at the plate before sophomore Mason Riggs got the final out.

Riggs was the fourth Howe pitcher used in the game.

Junior Peyton Reagan got the start, but he was pulled in the third when Leonard took a 5-4 lead.

Senior Tanner Hartsfield came on in relief and struck out two before a Howe error allowed two runs to cross.

Hartsfield worked four innings and scattered four hits while striking out five,

The Bulldogs broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring five runs to take a 9-5 lead.

Eleven batters came to the plate in that frame and the Bulldogs collected four hits and took advantage of two Leonard errors to get the five runs.

Riggs had a 2-RBI single and Senior Jaden Matthews doubled to drive in a run.

Howe added three more runs in the fifth as senior Brennan Ross walked to start the inning.

An error put sophomore Bryce Krantz on and Ross was subbed out for courtesy runner Kyler Anderson.

Anderson and Krantz both scored to bump the Howe lead to 12-6.

The Bulldogs added another run in the sixth, but had to sweat out the finish as Ross could not get an out in the three batters he faced on the mound.

Riggs came in to put out the min-rally and preserve the win.

Howe and Van Alstyne finish the regular season with 8-4 records and reportedly will play off the tie on Monday at a neutral site.
