For a pair of Van Alstyne tennis players who thought their year had ended with a third place finish at the district meet, the season continues.

The mixed doubles team of Janea Larriviere and Noah Tormos, both juniors, replaced Sydney Simmons and Grayson Leinart at the regional meet when Simmons forfeited her advancement due to a soccer commitment.

Larriviere and Tormos, who had been on an upward climb since the latter part of the season, battled their way through the 16-team, Region II field at Tyler Junior College on April 17 and 18 to earn a trip to the state meet in College Station, which will be contested on May 18-19.

Sixteen mixed doubles teams started the regional tournament on April 17 and in the first round the Van Alstyne duo won a close match against Quitman’s Diego Flores and Kelly Murphy, 6-2,4-6,7-6.

They came back to the courts later that day in round two and breezed to a 6-0,6-1 win over Margaret Cranford and Cody Lacefield of Redwater.

On Tuesday the pair beat a team from Prairiland, Johnathan Folse and Karsen McClain, 6-3, 2-6 and 6-3 in the semifinals.

Later it was the Whitesboro duo of Scott Gautier and Ruth Leach who won the first set, 6-4, before the Van Alstyne pair rebounded with 6-3 and 6-4 wins to claim the regional title.

The storybook ride will continue in about a month as they travel to College Station — the second Van Alstyne mixed doubles team in the last two seasons to reach the state level.
