For Howe powerlifters Tanner Hartsfield and Michael Hymel, the results from the 2017 state meet in Abilene on Saturday were not at a level they had hoped.
Hymel, a junior competing in the 181-pound weight class, a ninth place finish was disappointing to him, but for a first trip to state, an accomplishment.
In his first year at the state meet, Hymel finished with a 505/310/485 line in his three events, for a total of 1,300 pounds. His 505 lift in the squat was a personal best, but his totals in the bench and deadlift were off of his previous best marks.
For Hartsfield, in his senior season, he went into the meet with much higher expectations after an outstanding final season.
The Region 6 champion in the 181-pound class, Hartsfield finished 12th at Abilene.
His event line was: 500/300/490 for a 1290 total.
A multi-sports standout at Howe, Hartsfield played in a baseball game on Tuesday night and ran in a track meet on Thursday, all before traveling to Abilene Friday night for the state meet.
He should be proud of his week.
