The Lady Panthers took that tortuous trip to Lone Oak on March 9 and the ride back was not a happy one.

The Lady Buffs scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth, handing Van Alstyne a 2-1, district loss.

Both pitchers were in charge in this one as each team managed just three hits in the seven-inning affair.

Madi Williams was in the circle for the Lady Panthers and she gave up just one earned run, along with those three hits.

Lone Oak pitcher M. Nicholas struck out nine and gave up no earned runs in the team’s second District 10-3A game.

Van Alstyne scored its only run in the first inning. Junior Treylee Neill had an infield hit, but was erased on a fielder’s choice ground out by senior Peyton Welch. Welch stole both second and third bases, and scored on an error by the Lone Oak catcher.

Lone Oak answered in the bottom half of the first, tying the game at 1-1.

The Lady Panthers missed a good scoring opportunity in the third as senior Carly Ochoa doubled and was at third with two out. Peyton Welch hit a shot up the middle, but Nicholas made the catch to end that threat.

In the bottom of the fourth a Van Alstyne double play wiped out a Lone Oak scoring chance. With runners at first and third, Neill threw out a base runner at first, then Jenna Williams threw out the Lone Oak runner who was trying to score on the play. A 5-3-2 double-play.

In the bottom of the sixth, Nicholas doubled, moved to third on a Van Alstyne error and scored on a sacrifice fly to right.

The top of the Van Alstyne order, Ochoa, Neill, and Jenna Williams had three hits in eight trips, the bottom was 0-for-8.

After two spring break games, Van Alstyne will host Howe on March 24. Junior varsity starts at 5:00.
