The Van Alstyne Lady Panthers were nipped at the wire by Leonard in the 2017 Panther Relays on March 9, losing at home to the Lady Tigers 126-125. That’s not too shabby considering that Leonard captured the 2015 state championships and have always had strong track programs.
Freshman Sydney Ingram garnered 39 points in the Lady Panthers efforts and sophomore Emme Fernandez added 21. Ingram finished first in the 100-meter hurdles, third in both the triple jump and 300 hurdles, and ran on the third place 800-meter relay team. Rylie Reece finished first in the shot and senior Hannah Taylor won the 3200-meter run.
Fernandez earned points in four events for the Lady Panthers, finishing second in the pole vault. Emma Morgan finished first in the 400-meter run.
Seniors Levi Jones and De’Angelo Alexander paced the Van Alstyne boys’ team to a second place finish behind Aubrey.
Jones earned 26 of the teams’ 115 points, while Alexander added 24, winning the triple jump. Jones won the long jump and anchored a couple of relay teams.
After spring break, the Van Alstyne track teams will travel to Melissa on March 23 for their next meet.
