Van Alstyne head coach Mikeal Miller and his Panthers football team played well against Melissa in their final scrimmage before Friday night’s season opener at Quinlan Ford.

"I thought our effort and enthusiasm was better than the week before. We executed better offensively," Miller said.

The Panthers will continue to work on execution on both sides of the ball leading up to their first game.

"It’s all about getting better each week," Miller said. "Winning is important for lots of different reasons, but the main thing we are concerned with is how hard we play and if we are better than we were last week."

Van Alstyne will look to improve upon last year’s 7-5 playoff team while Quinlan Ford finished 5-5 in 2013.

"Quinlan Ford is very physical and runs a smash-mouth offense. We need to be very disciplined defensively," Miller said.

The season opener will be played in Quinlan at Thompson Middle School and starts at 7:30 p.m. Check out this address — — for driving directions.
