Nearly 800 runners took to the streets of Van Alstyne on May 3 to compete in the sixth annual Little Big Town 5K and one-mile fun run.
With proceeds benefiting the Riley Sprowl family, some serious and other not-so-serious runners battled the heat and punishing hills of our town for some friendly competition.
Some of the more spirited battles we witnessed included the closing sprint of Van Alstyne High School athletic director and head football coach Mikeal Miller as he overtook Luke Haker in the final yards of the 5K.
In another, former Van Alstyne basketball standout Jace Williamson most likely allowed his wife Lexie to edge him at the finish as she had the better time.
Sherman High School distance standout Sam Dick was the first finisher in the 5k with a winning time of 18:26.3.
Molly McQuirk finished first among the females, running the hilly course in 20:56.5.
Doug Farris led a large Howe contingent, finishing second just 10 seconds behind the winner with a time of 18:36.2.
Ladies Masters winner was Julie Murray, also of Howe, with a time of 27:08.6. Masters winner among the men was Mark Dick who finished the course in 21:45.1
Complete results of the race can be found at Race Chip Timing.
