The Lady Panthers traveled to Pilot Point on Jan. 14 to continue District 12-2A play and came home with a 43-24 loss.

The Lady Bearcats were dropping in 3-pointers in the first half and scoring from in the paint in the second, handing Van Alstyne its fifth league loss.

After dropping behind 10-0, Van Alstyne (11-14)(2-5) opened its scoring as Maddie Horn dropped in a basket from inside. She finished off the quarter with a 3-point shot, as the Lady Bearcats took a 13-5 lead.

Allison Hensley stuck back an offensive rebound to get the visitors off to a quick start in the second quarter. Hensley finished with eight points and solid defensive play.

Molly Mayes picked up a rebound at the Lady Panthers end and dropped in a shot to cut into the Pilot Point lead. After scoring just four points in the third quarter, the Lady Panthers picked up the pace in the fourth although they were desperately short-handed.

Carleigh Simmons and Hannah Fernandez were both unavailable for the game, and Emma Moreno did not play in the second half, coming out with an injury to her right leg.

Hensley had two baskets in the fourth quarter. After Horn dropped in a shot from the right side, Hannah Smith sent in a 3-pointer to close out the Van Alstyne scoring.

With a bye in the District 12-2A schedule, VA Coach Tim Bryant wanted to get more game experience for his team and work a newcomer into his rotations. Freshman guard Bryanna Hernandez made her varsity debut a memorable one, dropping in 14 points and grabbing seven steals.

Junior Maddie Horn had her most prolific scoring game of the season with a game-leading 20-point effort. Both Horn and Hernandez were 2-of-4 from 3-point range, and Horn had five steals in the contest.

Horn’s basket early in the first quarter gave Van Alstyne a 10-9 lead, and it didn’t trail for the remainder of the game.

Emma Moreno added 12 points and two steals for the Lady Panthers.
