First, I hope that our library had a great kickoff for their Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers Program last night, Thursday, Nov. 30. Many of you knew Dorothy Connor Loftice, who went to her heavenly reward not very long ago after a tragic accident. Dorothy and her family were so important to our community, and now that importance will continue because the family wanted to contribute to something else lasting here. Our librarian, Judy Kimzey, suggested a program whereby internet hot spots could be loaned from the library for folks who otherwise lacked internet access. The family contributed the funds to be entrusted to the Friends of the Library and then disbursed to run the Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers Program. To donate or learn more about the program please visit FriendsofVAlibrary.com.
Further, these notes will be a reminder of events coming up very soon. This coming Saturday, Dec. 2, we will have our monthly Friends of the Library Breakfast at the Community Center. The tree lighting ceremony will be at 6 p.m. the same evening at Dorothy Fielder Park, and then the park will be ready to be the last stop for our Christmas Parade which begins at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9. After the parade, Santa and hot chocolate will be in the Park.
Last, I want to comment on how well our different family and civic groups cooperate, fund and coordinate events like this. The events mentioned above were brought about by the Dorothy Loftice family, the city library, the Friends of the Library, the Community Development Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, Keep Van Alstyne Beautiful and several elements of Van Alstyne’s city staff.
Happy Holidays, everyone!
Mayor Larry Cooper
