There is perhaps nothing more attractive than a man with a sense of humor.

Add a big heart to the mix, and well, you’ve got yourself a guy who is downright hunky.

The judges for next week’s Handsome Hunks of Erath County competition have their work cut out for them. Eleven great guys will compete Friday night at City Hall at City Limits for the title of the hunkiest man in all of Erath County.

I have the pleasure of knowing many of these guys and I can tell you that the real motivation behind their willingness to dance, entertain and step out of their comfort zone has little to nothing to do with winning the title.

It has to do with raising money for Meals on Wheels of Erath County.

Last year’s event raised a whopping $25,000 for MOWEC and its executive director Whitney Lee says it’s money the organization desperately needs to continue delivering hot meals to 150 elderly and shut-in residents each week.

“The Handsome Hunks fundraiser plays a major part in keeping the meals moving at Meals on Wheels," Lee said. “Since Meals on Wheels began in 1995, we've never had to place a qualified senior on a wait-list for food. However, with recent cutbacks to grants, we're facing the possibility of either starting a wait-list for seniors or limiting other services. This event will help us meet the needs of local home-bound seniors without forcing them to wait for services.”

My good friend Lisa Pendleton started the event locally five years ago and allows me to help.

We met early this year to come up with the names of potential hunks, divvied up the list and started making calls.

When I phoned Jon Koonsman and Sheriff Matt Coates I was pretty sure they would turn me down. My request for them to compete in a hunky show was initially met with shock and confusion; Jon even joked that I had the wrong number.

But when I told them the money raised would benefit Meals on Wheels, they stopped asking questions and said, “I’m in.”

Since then, Jon, Matt and nine other guys - VW Stephens, Brandon Huckabee, Byron Anderson, Jacob Fain, Michael Brown, Michael Prather, Monty Stone, Phil Greer and Ryan Young - have met weekly to practice their dance moves, sell tables and generate a whole lot of excitement with their hilarious videos on Facebook.

It’s been a lot of fun, and in just six short days, Erath County will officially have a new hunk.

If you have tickets to the sold-out event, consider yourself lucky.

The fun will be emceed by Shane Pack and former Erath County hunk David Baskett.

I’m guessing it will be a night to remember, and one that raises a whole lot of money for one of the county’s most important organizations.

If you see Lisa or one of the hunks, tell them they are appreciated.
