Joan Allene (Tucker) Thomas

FLOWER MOUND — Joan Allene (Tucker) Thomas, age 77 of Flower Mound, Texas passed away peacefully on March 6, 2017. She will be laid to rest at the Gunter Cemetery, in Gunter, Texas on Saturday, March 18th at 10:00 am.

Joan was born on September 28, 1939 in Caddo, Oklahoma. Her family moved to Celina, Texas when Joan was 14 years old. Even though she lived in Texas for most of her life, she always considered herself a proud “Okie”.

She married Carl Thomas in Durant, OK on July 8, 1958, after only dating him for six weeks. He was on leave from the Army, so she immediately packed up and moved to Ft. Benning, GA, where Carl was stationed. They returned to Celina after his discharge in 1959.

Joan worked hard her entire life, but spent most of it working for the US Postal Service, where she retired in 1999. She and Carl enjoyed their retirement living in Gunter, Texas, where he had built their dream home. They spent many hours, sitting on their front porch, enjoying their new life in the country. Their favorite hours were spent watching their grandchildren play in their front yard. After Carl passed away, Joan briefly moved to Sherman, and then to Flower Mound to be closer to her daughter’s family.

Joan devoted her life to her family. Together, she and Carl raised two children, and were then blessed with a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law and four beautiful granddaughters. Everyone that knew Joan knew all about those granddaughters. She was so proud to be their “Mimi”.

Joan is survived by two children, and their spouses: Don and Paula Thomas, of Winnsboro, Texas and Sheila and Beau Moon, of Highland Village, Texas. Her granddaughters: Jordan Moon, Kasey Thomas, Taylor Moon and Ryan Moon. Her six siblings and their spouses: Emma Jackson of Gunter, TX; Roy Vest of Calera, OK; Rilda and Lynn Jackson of Calera, OK; Elaine and Ronnie O’Dell of Caney, OK; Jackie and Kathy Vest of Caney, OK; Rick and Judy Vest of Caney, OK. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends also survive her.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Carl Ray Thomas, and their infant son, Gary Lynn, her mother Mary Allene Vest, step-dad Haskell Vest, her loving grandmother, Luzena (Lucy) Ann Minks Tucker, and grandfather James William Tucker.

The family of Joan Allene Thomas wishes to thank Ardent Hospice and Abundant Blessings for being there to comfort our dear Mom and our family through this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the American Cancer Society.
