Do you have internet access? Many rural areas in Central Texas have inadequate or no broadband internet services available. Michelle Ryan, Democratic candidate for state representative for District 17, wants to make rural internet access a state priority. Ryan has been meeting with citizens of Bastrop, Caldwell, Gonzales, Karnes and Lee counties over the past year to learn more about rural internet access and find ways to make it happen.

Since Ryan raised public interest in the issue, Rep. John Cyrier, the current District 17 representative, all of a sudden has discovered the issue and has promised to make changes. Where were the changes over the past two years? During the legislative session, when representatives introduce new laws to bring about change, nothing was done.

Ryan’s priorities include adequately funding public education, protecting our water and providing affordable health care to all Texans. What has Cyrier done about these important issues? What will he do to protect our groundwater from being stolen away from us? Apparently nothing.

Instead, he has supported things like discriminatory bathroom bills while state aid to our schools and health care services falters. We need some big changes in the Texas Legislature. We certainly need a change in District 17. We have heard enough hollow talk and no action from folks like Cyrier.

Let’s elect Michelle Ryan as District 17 state representative. I have heard her discuss issues of concern to millions of Texans. She knows what she is talking about. More importantly, she is ready and willing to fight to solve our problems.
