The residents of Van Alstyne have a new restaurant to try out. About four months ago, Mi Taco opened its doors giving the community unique dining experience.
The grand opening for the restaurant was held this weekend at 954 W. Van Alstyne Parkway in Van Alstyne.
The fast food restaurant is a build your own burrito establishment and boasts fresh ingredients.
Lone Star Food Stores Chief Executive Officer Diane McCarty said Burger King had been in that spot for 20 years. However, they opted on Mi Taco to replace the burger restaurant because they listened to the residents of Van Alstyne.
“Once the lease expired for the Burger King, we knew we wanted to do something different,” McCarty said. “The community didn’t need another burger joint, Van Alstyne already had four or five pop up since Burger King opened all those years ago.”
McCarty said they surveyed the residents to see what they preferred.
“We gave out hundreds of surveys to ask the community what they wanted as a restaurant,” she said. “The majority said Van Alstyne lacked a coffee shop and a fast food Mexican food restaurant.”
McCarty said they wanted to offer a quick way for people to get their Mexican food.
“They can pop in and eat, or they can get it to go on their way home,” she said.
Lone Star Food Stores is the retail portion of Douglass Distributing, McCarty said. There are currently 22 stores with quick-serve restaurants. McCarty said the company already had a Mi Taco in operation in Denison, and had found success with it. They wanted to give Van Alstyne the same food experience as Denison, but on a slightly bigger scale.
The grand opening for the restaurant was Saturday. There were a few things for children to do. There was a bounce house, piñatas that needed to be broken, and face painting available inside the store. The hosts did not forget about the big kids; there was a tortilla eating contest for anybody who wanted to test their limits. There was a roaming Mariachi band playing for the customers’ listening pleasure.
Brenda McDonald, the President of the Van Alstyne Chamber of Commerce, said she is delighted to have Mi Taco come aboard as a member of the chamber.
“We are always seeking quality businesses to be a part of our neighborhood,” McDonald said. “We are very proud to welcome Mi Taco to Van Alstyne and our chamber. It is a great place for people who are traveling through and for the folds who live here. Great food and great people there.”
