VAN ALSTYNE — Van Alstyne ISD will host its first ever “Fine Arts Extravaganza” on Thursday, May 3, from 7-9 p.m., showcasing students involved in all genres of the arts from all three campuses — elementary, middle and high school. The event will take place at Van Alstyne Middle School where three stages will be set to host all of the musical and theatrical performances, while artwork from the visual arts departments from all three campuses will line the walls.

Both Van Alstyne Middle School and Van Alstyne High School Theater Arts Departments will perform throughout the evening on the cafeteria stage, with a couple of the VAHS Band Ensembles and the Elementary Choir interspersed. A stage set up in the library will host the VAHS Choir, along with flute, clarinet and brass ensembles from the VAHS Band. Finally, the VAMS gym will become the stage for the VAMS Choir and Band, three percussion ensembles from the VAHS Band and a performance by the VAHS Color Guard.

As those in attendance travel back and forth from the various stages, as they’ll be treated to the best works of art — paintings, drawings, sculptures, etc. — from the art students at all three campuses.

“We are excited to host this ‘Extravaganza,’ and hope the community will come out to show their support for all of our students,” Fine Arts Director Tim Fulton said. “We have an amazing amount of talent for the size of our school district, and I can’t wait to show it off — all at one time, all in one place!”

Leading up to the Fine Arts Extravaganza, several of the bands and choirs will be hosting individual concerts, as well. The Middle School and High School Choirs will host a joint concert on Tuesday, April 24, at 7 p.m. at the VAHS Cafeteria. The VAMS and VAHS Bands will follow with their annual Spring Concert on Thursday, April 26, in the VAHS gym. Band Booster scholarship recipients and end-of-year awards will also be announced at this concert.

There will be a Percussion Concert featuring both VAMS and VAHS percussionists on Saturday, April 28, also at 7 p.m. in the VAHS cafeteria. This concert will feature guest artist Jose Aponte. There will be a nominal charge of $5 per adult and $3 for under 17 to raise funds for new equipment needs for the percussion section

The Jazz Band will perform its own concert on Tuesday evening, May 1, at 7 p.m. in the VAHS cafeteria and will also feature a guest artist, Travis Harris. Refreshments will be served for this event. The Jazz Band is also in the middle of a fundraiser, selling tickets to a June 3 Rough Riders Game. That sale ends May 1, so concert attendees can place their orders that night if they are interested.

This group of musicians recently performed at the Chet Baker Educational Jazz Festival, receiving a “Superior” performance rating and enjoying a clinic with a guest musician to help them improve. Both VAMS and VAHS Bands also received “Superior” ratings at the recent UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest, garnering straight “1s” from all three judges.
