The Van Alstyne Chamber of Commerce is again hosting Meet The Candidates, a forum for the public to learn more from and about those running for Van Alstyne City Council and Van Alstyne ISD Board of Trustees.

The forum will be at Grayson College, utilizing its auditorium with microphones and stadium-type seating, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22, with the doors opening at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, those with questions for all the candidates or for any one in particular can write those questions down and drop them in boxes at the Texas Star Bank lobby, corner of Preston and Jefferson streets, or the Senior Center on South Main, facing the government building.

There are three seats available on the Van Alstyne City Council, Places 1, 2 and 3, currently held by Brad Clough, Teddie Ann Salmon and Robert Jaska, respectively.

Likewise, there are three seats on the Van Alstyne ISD Board of Trustees coming up for election. Those are Places 5, 6 and 7, currently held by Dennis Smith, Steve Roddy and David Kerr respectively.

Deadline for applying to run is today, Friday, Feb. 16, and the completed, pre-notarized packets for city council applicants are due by 5 p.m. at City Hall, 242 E. Jefferson St. in downtown Van Alstyne. Likewise, the now-vacated mayor seat will be on the May 5 election ballots. Applicants for that position have an extended deadline, but must have their completed, pre-notarized packets in by March 5.

Those applying for one of the school board seats must have their applications in before the end of the school district’s administration office’s workday, 549 Miller Lane. Call ahead of time, 903-482-8800 to confirm.

Chamber of Commerce President Brenda McDonald said that the Chamber and it’s Board of Directors feel “it is important to hold the Meet The Candidates forum as a way of letting the voters get informed of the candidates’ stances on the issues, their qualifying work experiences and to just get a good feel for all those who are hoping to serve the area.”
