Long time a Christmas tradition for Van Alstyne residents, the Christmas parade will kick off again this year at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 9. Sponsored by the Van Alstyne Chamber of Commerce, the parade carries the theme this year of “A Magical Musical Christmas,” and prizes and awards will be given for several categories, including Best Use of Theme.
The parade will line up on the north end of Waco Street, at or near the Boy Scout area, beginning around 1 p.m., with step-off starting at 2 p.m. The procession will move over onto Preston Street, go south, then east to the railroad track, back north again and disband after it passes the downtown gazebo park. Awards will be announced soon afterward.
Horses, cars, trucks, some pulling floats and others just decorated for the season, fire trucks and police cars, groups and organizations walking the length of the parade, a few puppies cleverly costumed up — these are just some of the usual entries into the Van Alstyne Christmas Parade.
Entrants need to remember — there is only one Santa Claus and he’s flying in just for this occasion. No others allowed.
Santa and his bride, Mrs. Claus, will remain at the Dorothy Fielder Park afterward to have their photos made with children of every age. They do have to get back to their regular Christmas duties long before dark, so, depending on the crowd, time to tell him just what you want for Christmas will be limited to the young set. Sorry adults! And during that time, there will be hot chocolate for everyone, free.
There is no entry charge to be a part of the Van Alstyne Christmas Parade. The entry form can be found Online at VanAlstyneChamber.org, then scroll down on the home page to the link. Or, if one decides at the very last minute to enter, there will be entry forms to be filled out at the line-up area.
