The 2nd annual Van Alstyne Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament, held recently at Hurricane Creek Country Club in Anna, was a fundraising effort combined with a sports activity popular with many. It netted the Chamber of Commerce about $4,000 and provided the 60 participating golfers a day of pure camaraderie.
The golfers received lunch before they headed out and dinner after they got back off the course, all a part of their entry fees. There were games all along the courses, beginning with the first where those who signed up all putted to a hole at the same time. Theoretically, the golfer who got his numbered golf ball closest won the prize, but it was hard to imagine getting closer than the one golfer who got it directly into the hole.
Chamber volunteers commented later about how gracious and accommodating the Hurricane Creek staff was to help them out with such items as passing beverages out to the golfers, and having all the golf carts ready for them to head out. A volunteer said that one of those who assisted was so helpful that the Chamber gave him some raffle tickets, and he ended up winning the biggest raffle prize.
The first place gross team was the Premier Pawn Group of Gary McDonald, Brian McDonald, Jason McDonald and Doak McDonald. First place net went to the Classic Of Texoma Group with Eric Bryant, Phil Jones, Keith Stanfield and Hal Nabors. Second place net was made up of the Messer, Rockefeller and Fort Group, including Tommy Fort, Davis Fort, Reed Fort and Julie Fort.
Winning game prizes were: Longest Marshmallow drive — Jacob Arnold; Long drive contest — Jamie Gladden; Closest to the pin contest — Keith Stanfield, and that winning put made by Tommy Fort.
