NEVADA— The Van Alstyne Panthers found their way back on track to a winning season after beating the Community Braves in non-district action on September 22.


The Panthers (3-1) hit the ground running and took possession when Tanner Jones (34) scored a touchdown on a rushing play. The extra point kicked by Austin Moore gave the Panthers a 7-0 lead which they held for the remaining 8 minutes of the first quarter.


Van Alstyne repeated the success of the first quarter, retaining possession in the opening minutes of the second quarter with a completed pass from quarterback Rhett Gallagher (2) to Ty Cosper (11) for a touchdown. The Panthers showcased a strong running game with a rushing play by Gallagher who ran the ball past the Braves defense for the 2-point conversion.


Gallagher had 18 carries for 223 yards and three touchdowns and was 10-of-13 passing for 139 yards and two scores in total for the game.


Van Alstyne enjoyed a brief 15-0 lead until Brock Price (3) scored a touchdown and Cooper Kane (16) kicked for the point-after-touchdown for Community on a rushing play to make the score 15-7 with eight minutes to go in the first half. The second quarter was not short on scoring action on both sides with a rushing touchdown play from Gallagher and the extra point kicked by Moore. The Panthers closed out the first half leading with a score of 22-7.


The third quarter started with a bang when Gallagher completed a pass to Moore to continue the scoring duo’s hot streak. After a failed 2 point conversion attempt by Van Alstyne, Community answered back quickly with a 76 yard rushing touchdown to bring the score to 34-14 in the Panthers’ favor with seven minutes left in the third quarter.


Community scored a rushing touchdown and kicked for the point after to make the score 35-21 with 4 minutes to go in the quarter. Van Alstyne answered swiftly with a 60-yard rushing touchdown by Gallagher and a point scored by Moore with a good kick to end the third quarter 42-21.


Community started the fourth quarter with a passing touchdown and missed a kicking attempt for the point after touchdown for a score of 42-27. The scoring showdown continued in the final quarter when Tanner Jones (34) helped assure victory for the Panthers with a rushing touchdown with Moore kicking for the extra point for Van Alstyne to close the game with a final score of 49-27.


Overall Tanner Jones added 99 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, while Austin Moore and Ty Cosper had the touchdown catches for Van Alstyne (3-1), which scored 35 points in the middle two quarters on the way to 476 total yards.


Van Alstyne looks to secure another win in their next game. Catch them at Panthers Stadium on Sept. 29 when they face off against Gainesville (2-2).
