During the Van Alstyne City Council meeting on April 11, Mayor Larry Cooper signed a proclamation to recognize May as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness month — and to promote motorcycle safety and awareness within the community.
Skee Dodson, from Texoma ABATE, was joined by several motorcyclists from various clubs and organizations to promote motorcycle safety and awareness among all motorists on the city’s public roads. The latest verified statistics available show Texas fatalities in 2015 increased by only 1 percent, when the national increase was at 8 percent. Dodson said
“We believe the difference in Texas is that proactive towns and communities, like Van Alstyne, proclaim not only May for Motorcycle Safety and Awareness — but they proclaim the entire year for Motorcycle Safety and Awareness,” Dodson said.
The proclamation’s intent is to raise community awareness and to help the visibility and safety of not only motorcyclists, but also of children, pedestrians, joggers, bicyclists, mopeds and many others.
