The Van Alstyne Chamber of Commerce is hosting Meet The Candidates on April 18, giving the public a chance to meet the candidates for Van Alstyne City Council. The forum will be at the Community Center, 262 North Preston, with doors opening at 6 p.m., and the question-and-answer session at 6:30 p.m.

The forum is scheduled prior to the start of early voting for the May 6 election.

City Council terms run two years. There are three seats coming available on the Van Alstyne City Council.

The first, Place 2, is an unfinished one-year term, with the person elected filling out the unexpired two-year term vacated two months ago by Councilwoman Timmerle Kelly. Running for the Place 2 seat are Teddie Ann Salmon and Jan Walker.

Councilman Russell Moore, Place 4, did not file to retain his seat. Lee Thomas is challenged by write-in candidate Tiffany Clum.

Place 5 has incumbent Councilor Billy Plake seeking re-election with Suzon Crowell running against him.

Incumbent Mayor Larry Cooper is unopposed in his bid for re-election. Kyrie Nobles had initially filed as a write-in candidate, but since has withdrawn her name from this election.

There are also three propositions on the May 6 ballot. The first two are connected to one another and ask the voters to, basically, dissolve the Economic Development Corporation and to reinstate it as a Municipal Development District. The third proposition is more of a housekeeping issue in which the voters are being asked to renew the sales tax money designated for street work.

To address those first two issues, the Chamber has asked that the EDC be represented at this forum.

Questions for these candidates must be submitted in writing ahead of time, and the Chamber has set up two ways for inquirers to submit their questions. The first is Online, at . Survey Monkey, the hosting site, maintains the anonymity of all those who submit their questions. There are also boxes and forms set up at the Van Alstyne Senior Center, 112 S. Main Drive, and in the lobby of Texas Star Bank, 177 E. Jefferson St, both in downtown Van Alstyne.
