On Saturday, June 24, the city of Melissa hosted its annual Celebration of Freedom event. This event, which has been occurring since 2010, is held on the last Saturday of June every year. Even though it’s not strictly classified as a 4th of July event, the city of Melissa still has fireworks at the end of the night.

Executive Director of the Melissa Area Chamber of Commerce Bill Jones said he was pleased with the how the night went.

“It was a great event, with a fantastic turnout,” Jones said. “The fireworks are some of the best around, and we got great comments about the overall event.”

Even though the 10 a.m. parade was cancelled due to rain, the city and citizens refused to let the rain dampen the rest of the celebration. Micheline Langford, a resident of Bells said she drove over to Melissa to see if the rumors she heard about the Celebration of Freedom event were true.

“I kept hearing about this amazing event in Melissa,” Langford said. “So I came over to see what all the hype was about.”

Langford said she enjoyed the event.

“Once the rain headed out of town, the event did not disappoint,” Langford said. “The food, music and people were worth the drive.”

One mom drove out to check out the children’s area. Karista Cripe, a resident out of Southmayd, brought her 2-year-old to play in the bounce houses and other playground equipment.

“Where I live, there isn’t much for toddlers to do,” Cripe said. “That is why I brought my daughter over to play in the kid’s area.”

Cripe also said the price wasn’t bad, either.

“It’s $5 for my daughter to play all day,” Cripe said. “Where else are you going to find that?”

The event had food vendors such as wings from Just Wingin’ It, barbecue, funnel cakes, corn dogs and gourmet sliders. There was also Everything Ice Cream, and Kona Ice snow cones. The band Texas Flood, a Stevie Ray Vaughn tribute band, came on stage at 7 p.m. and played up until it was time to count down to the fireworks.

The fireworks themselves elicited plenty of “oohs” and “ahhs.” The fireworks show lasted for a good 20 minutes.
